NexGard is an anti-flea and tick medication in chewable tablet form for dogs from 8 weeks of age and weighing at least 2 kg. Its active ingredient is afoxolaner, which acts on the nervous system of parasites, causing the rapid death of fleas and ticks after biting the animal. It is indicated for the treatment and prevention of infestations by fleas (Ctenocephalides felis and Ctenocephalides canis) and ticks (several species, such as Rhipicephalus sanguineus). NexGard kills fleas before they lay eggs, with rapid onset of action, reaching 100% effectiveness in up to 8 hours against fleas and providing protection for up to 30 days. The medication is safe for use in several breeds and can be administered with or without food, without loss of effectiveness. It is common to see dead fleas after treatment due to the hyperstimulation caused by the product. Possible side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and loss of appetite. Caution should be exercised in dogs with a history of seizures. There is also a NexGard Spectra version, which, in addition to fleas and ticks, treats intestinal worms and mites that cause otodectic mange, combining afoxolaner with milbemycin oxime. In short, NexGard is an effective, practical, and safe oral antiparasitic for monthly flea and tick control in dogs.
